Lifestyle:
By the end of the year
1999 there was a series on Egyptian television based on a novel called
"Hawanem Garden City" meaning the great dames of garden city.
This fact is not stated to drive attention to television or literature
or anything of the sort but to reflect a picture of how the public sees
Garden City and its habitats.Garden City holds a large number of foreigners
and their embassies, the Germans established their embassy first
then came the English then the Italians and so on.
The
foreign approach to Garden City is not the whole picture: until
world war 2 there were more villas in Garden City than anything
else and the few apartment buildings were 3 or 4 stories high at the
most. The people inside those structures were mostly pashas who chose
Garden City for its closeness to Downtown and where things were happening.
The prime bankers and doctors of Egypt chose the place for the same
reason, the doctors in particular for the walking distance between them
and the hospitals of "Fouad Al Awal" and "Kasr Al Aini".
In the present day Garden City is pretty much the same, of-course
some apartment buildings are a lot higher than 3 or 4 stories but the
social class of the people is still similar. There is no commercial
approach to Garden City at all except for a few bazaars and things of
the sort close to the hotels and that helps to keep the Neighborhood's
low profile.
Crime
rate:
Almost unmentionable a very low crime rate even though the neighborhood
is surrounded by lower class districts, but the security level specially
around the embassies scares the trouble away.
Population:
Garden city's population in terms of person per square kilometer is
increasing very slowly, it is a stable Neighborhood with a stable population.
Nightlife:
Only in the hotels of garden city but most people just cross
the bridge to the island of Zamalek, the island offers a wide variety
of places to go and things to do. Anything from the average coffee shop
going through bars, pubs and restaurants up to the most exotic clubs
in the country can be found in Zamalek and with numbers.
